History
Historically, bottlers commonly used:
- DE (diatomaceous earth) precoat pressure filters

DE was popular because it:

- tolerated upset conditions well
The disadvantages became more significant over time:
- handling silica dust (worker safety)
- disposal of spent DE
- inconsistent filtration if precoats were poor
- labor-intensive operation
- product losses during precoat and changeout

These factors caused many beverage companies—including Coca-Cola bottlers—to evaluate absolute depth cartridges during the 1990’s and 2000’s.

Betafine XL vs Betafine PBG
Betafine PBG (Multilayer / Graded Density) Absolute
- Used for Beverage prefiltration.
- Multiple layers of polypropylene media, typically with progressively finer pores from outside to inside.
- Often called depth filters with graded porosity.
- Larger particles are captured on the outer layers, finer particles deeper in the media.
Betafine XL (Single-Layer) Absolute
- Used for Beverage final polishing filtration.
- A single uniform layer of polypropylene filter media.
- Filtration occurs primarily at one depth throughout the cartridge.
Can Betafine replace DE completely?
Betafine works when:
- solids loading is moderate
- upstream clarification is good
- no large gelatinous particles exist
- cartridges are sized correctly
DE may still be preferred when:
- very high solids loading
- pulp-containing beverages
- difficult syrup batches
- poor upstream clarification
- extremely long production runs
In those situations, DE can hold several times more contaminant before reaching its terminal pressure drop.
Betafine vs DE Economics
Although Betafine cartridges cost more per filter element, the overall operating cost is competitive or lower because they eliminate operating costs:

- slurry preparation
- precoat losses
- disposal costs
- labor
